Who Needs a Gingivectomy?

Using it to treat gum disease

When gum disease progresses to periodontitis, pockets will start to form between your teeth and gums. These can harbor bacteria and make them difficult to clean. A gingivectomy removes these pockets and supports better oral hygiene.

Using it to improve your smile’s aesthetic

Some of our patients have excess gum tissue, leading to a “gummy smile.” A gingivectomy can reshape the gum line, creating a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.

The Gingivectomy Procedure

Dr. Kirk performs gingivectomy surgeries in our office under local anesthesia. Your procedure will begin by numbing the targeted area to ensure your comfort throughout. She will then carefully remove excess gum tissue to create a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing gum line. We may include stitches to support your healing process.

Recommended Post-Operative Care

  • Avoid brushing the surgical area for a few days, and gently clean the surrounding teeth.
  • Take any antibiotics or pain relievers prescribed by Dr. Kirk to prevent infection and manage your discomfort.
  • Use warm saltwater rinses to help your healing and reduce inflammation.
  • Steer clear of smoking, alcohol, and hot or spicy foods.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments with Dr. Kirk so that she can monitor your healing.

The Long-Term Perks of This Procedure

A gingivectomy isn’t just about fixing your gum problem; it’s about setting yourself up with a healthier, happier smile. By removing pesky bacteria-harboring pockets, you give your gums a fighting chance by removing the risk of gum disease and tooth loss! Plus, who doesn’t love a confidence boost? A gingivectomy can help you achieve a perfect smile.

Gingivectomy Alternatives

  • While we generally recommend a gingivectomy to treat gum disease and gummy smiles, there are alternatives to consider:
  • Non-Surgical Treatment: In the early stages of gum disease, scaling, and root planing can be sufficient to prevent this surgery.
  • Gum Grafting: If you have significant gum recession, we can offer a gum graft to restore your tissue.
  • Orthodontics: In some cases, orthodontic treatment can address underlying issues that contribute to a gummy smile.

How to Prevent Needing a Gingivectomy

  • Brush and floss regularly to remove plaque and build-up of bacteria that contribute to gum disease.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods that promote bacteria growth.
  • Avoid smoking as it’s a major risk factor for gum disease.

Fossil Creek Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

Is a gingivectomy painful?

We make use of local anesthesia to make your procedure as pain-free as possible. However, some discomfort was normal after your procedure. Dr. Kirk will prescribe medication to help you manage any of your at-home pain.

How long will the procedure take?

The procedure typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of the work needed. After your initial consultation, Dr. Kirk will be able to give you a more accurate idea of what to expect for your surgery.

Will my gums grow back?

No, your removed gum tissue will not grow back. However, proper oral hygiene is a must to prevent the regrowth of excess tissue.

Can I smoke after my gingivectomy?

Smoking can interfere with your healing process, and it can increase the risk of complications. We strongly advise avoiding smoking during your recovery period and after, if possible.
